Astarte

Astarte is a Mesopotamian goddess. The painting is ambiguous as it could be her reflection, or her rising out of a body of water. Water invites the viewer to be likewise reflective as mirrors, or shiny surfaces, represent portals to other dimensions.

Morrigan

Morrigan is the Celtic war goddess; she is highly protective, and is inspired by my mother. She claims the souls of fallen warriors, and as a crows she takes their essence through the crack between worlds.

A Fine Pair

This painting was inspired by a good friend of mine who has a particular affection for pears. I wanted to paint pears in a manner I had never seen them painted before; as objects of elusive beauty.

Timesleep

“Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.” Life reminds me of Plato’s allegory of the cave. For this pastel work, I was ruminating on the age of the earth, of the civilizations that have come and gone; of the people and cultures that have been lost. When suddenly,I realized that everything and everyone that exists today is a cumulative expression of every decision that anything that has ever existed has ever made. Simply put, The Butterfly Effect extends from the past to the present and affects our future. Ergo, our past is inherently present, and our present is inherently our past.  The image depicts the world as seen darkly, through broken glass, where the past merges with the present, and life is like a dream.

Life Thrum

This painting demonstrates the living energy that is present in everything. Everything is alive and moving despite what our eyes tell us. The Golden Ears Mountain Range for example is moving albeit on a molecular level. Because we are carbon based life forms we can’t conceive of life existing beyond that construct; I believe everything is alive in some manner, or it wouldn’t exist.

Unnatural Beauty

This painting was inspired by how natural things are a rarity these days; everything is genetically modified, or controlled in some manner. There is a fusion between animal and foliage to demonstrate their interdependence. The Jaguar is a man made construct; a Peacock Jaguar, and some of the vegetation is likewise fabricated as it was inspired by circuit boards. The painting is beautiful, and demonstrates how seductive technology can be; just because something is enchanting, does not mean it is good. A person will buy this painting because it is gorgeous, but in the meantime, exotic species are becoming extinct. What is a painting compared to a living Jaguar?

The Guardians

Human beings, I believe, were meant to be the planet’s care takers. Our dangerous arrogance has enabled us to abuse nature in all forms. Consequently, we see ourselves as separate from nature rather than an extension of it.  The green lion represents the masculine side of nature (predatory, savage, protective) while the goddess (mother nature) represents the feminine side (nurturing, gentle, supportive). The painting is intended to suggest a balance between these two energies, and a respect for the spiritual ties that bind us all.

Artists' Dinner Party

This painting was inspired by the wild notion that when I die, should there be a hereafter, that I would like to have a dinner party with those famous artists who have lived before me, and that the essence of who they are should be stylistically reflected in how they are depicted. After all, what kind of heaven would it be if an artist doesn’t get to meet those whom she admires?  The composition was inspired by da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”

Flow

This pastel drawing was inspired by an old romantic relationship; it metaphorically represents me and my love at the time, as forces of nature. I believe as the title suggests, that people’s lives run more smoothly when they “go with the flow.” No one should ever force anything, but rather allow the course of their lives to evolve organically.

Interconnected

I have always been intellectually enthralled by how interconnected everything is to everything else in the microcosm and macrocosm. I do not believe in coincidence, but rather believe randomness is pattern on an enormous scale. I believe in the cause and effect of our universe, and that divine energy unites us all. I wanted to represent this relationship visually, and depicted a mermaid (with fins instead of arms) as the reality of the fantastic as it intersects with the reality of the physical.

Shadowgarden

Pure and simple, this pastel work was created as a celebration of life, imbued with a sense of freedom that only flight can express.

Dream of Valhalla

Some of my ancestors were Viking warriors, and I wanted to depict heaven as a peaceful timeless place; a place where all seasons exist simultaneously, a place without strife. The problem with mankind is man.
